Terry Fox Awarded $10,000 Food Grant

June 2, 2022

Terry Fox Elementary has secured a $10,000 Food Grant from the Breakfast Club of Canada that will go towards the school’s breakfast and snack program for the 2022-2023 school year. Since 1994, the Breakfast Club of Canada has been working with partners from all sectors to help children access a healthy breakfast each morning.

To secure funding, applications are received year-round, assessed, and then once a decision is made, the school/organization is notified of the decision. Earlier this year, Angela Magon, Principal of Terry Fox Elementary, applied for support in hopes of further providing for the vulnerable and diverse needs of her school population. This past April, she received the exciting news from the team at Breakfast Club of Canada that her school secured the food grant.

“When I first came to this school,” said Principal Magon, “we were only doing breakfast once a week. However, we noticed there were a lot of hungry kids who had a challenging time focusing throughout the day. Since then, we switched to providing a daily grab-and-go breakfast. Originally, we only had 10-15 kids a day, but now we serve breakfast for up to 40 students a day, sometimes more. We also provide snacks for every classroom to have in reserve for students whose parents may have forgotten to pack one or who are not able to provide them.”

Since implementing the daily breakfast, the school has noticed fewer behaviour issues because of hunger or energy spikes. Students are more focused and arrive earlier at school to get their breakfast. The program has been a remarkable success, and with the funding coming into effect in 2022/23, they will be able to continue supporting families who are currently using this program
