Highlights - Board Meeting - Jan. 18, 2022

The Abbotsford Board of Education regularly meets throughout the school year. Agendas and minutes from the public Board Meetings can be accessed through the District's Electronic School Board. Below is a summary of highlights from the meeting. To do our part to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and for everyone's safety, all public meetings of the Abbotsford Board of Education will be closed to the public and held virtually until further notice. The meetings will also be live-streamed.


Presentations

2021 Prime Minister’s Award - Certificate of Achievement

In November 2021, our school district received notification that two of our educators were recipients of the 2021 Prime Minister’s Award:

  • Joanne Weatherby | Rick Hansen Secondary School – received a certificate of achievement acknowledging her support and contribution to teaching excellence.
  • Karen Bowater | W.J. Mouat Secondary School – received a certificate of achievement acknowledging her support and contribution to teaching excellence in STEM.

The Prime Minister of Canada gives the Prime Minister’s Awards to exceptional Canadian school teachers. It is the most prestigious prize awarded to a teacher in Canada. Over 1,500 educators have received this award since its inception in 1993. Both educators shared their experience working in the profession.

Toti:ltcha Future Learning Plan - School Strategy for 2021-2022   

Superintendent Godden presented a high-level summary of where the district stands in relation to the work of Toti:ltcha, our future learning plan. This included updates on enhanced health and safety measures, rapid antigen tests, and more.

Secondary Schools – Progress Report from 2020-21

Assistant Superintendent, Gino Bondi, provided a progress report to the Board on secondary schools for the 2020-21 school year. The progress report highlighted key achievements and projects, signs of success and progress, and addressed some challenges faced to students and staff during the pandemic.

A motion was passed THAT, with respect to the Abbotsford School District’s 2020-24 Strategic Plan, the Board of Education finds that the school district is making reasonable progress toward increasing graduation rates and improving grade to grade transitions.

Operations

Abbotsford Traditional Middle/Secondary Renaming          

At the December 7, 2021, Public Board meeting, a Notice of Motion was presented giving notice of intent to rename Abbotsford Traditional Middle and Secondary Schools to Abbotsford Traditional School. In accordance with Board Policy 21 – Naming of School District Facilities/Property, Section 3.3 “Renaming existing Facility”, it has since been determined to slow the process to ensure that a more fulsome consultation process has occurred.
