5th Annual ‘Back to School’ Event Supports over 800 Students

September 1, 2023

The Abbotsford School District, in collaboration with Archway Community Services and the Salvation Army, marked a successful fifth year of its 'Back to School' event on August 19th.

This year's 'Back to School' event aimed to equip students with essential supplies and sought to alleviate the financial pressure families often face during the back-to-school season, as the average Canadian family spends approximately $709 on supplies. Understanding the stress and anxiety that this expense can bring, the event's goal was clear - to provide support to parents while ensuring that students are fully prepared for their first day of school.

With the assistance of funds from the Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign and the Student Affordability Fund, the event distributed 800 backpacks filled with school essentials. The Youth Commission and students from Bakerview Centre for Learning assisted in the packing of backpacks, filling them with school supplies such as paper, pencil cases, markers, and workbooks, preparing the students for the upcoming school year. The Salvation Army assembled food hampers, ensuring that families in need received essential items to support their household well-being.

Approximately 40 volunteers dedicated their time and effort on the day of the event, serving as a testament to the collaborative spirit that defines the Abbotsford community. A total of 812 students from 500 families were supported, exemplifying the impact of the 'Back to School' event and showcasing its importance in supporting students and alleviating the financial burden on families.

"This event is a testament to the strength of our community,” said Andrea Senft, Manager of Community Partnerships. “With partners like Archway Community Services and the Salvation Army, alongside the dedication of our students, and volunteers, we've created an event that truly supports the needs of our district’s families, connecting them with resources and preparing them for a successful year ahead."

The 'Back to School' event remains dedicated to supporting families and connecting them with community allies. The Abbotsford School District, Archway Community Services, the Salvation Army, and all involved partners are determined to keep this tradition alive for years to come, ensuring that every student steps into their classroom with confidence and a smile.
