A Safe and Inclusive Halloween Across Abbotsford Schools

October 15, 2025

Halloween is just around the corner, and our schools are buzzing with excitement as students prepare to show off their creativity and enjoy some festive fun together. As we get ready to celebrate, it’s important that our events and costume choices reflect the values we share as a community: kindness, inclusion, and respect.

Costumes

Costumes are a big part of the fun, but must be chosen with care. When planning your outfit, please keep in mind how it might be seen by others and avoid elements that may cause harm or offence to others.

  • Cultural or Racial Depictions: When choosing costumes, avoid those that portray or mimic a culture or ethnicity that isn’t your own. Traditional regalia, hairstyles, and cultural symbols should be worn only when they are part of your personal heritage.

  • Respecting Beliefs: Religious symbols or figures should not be used as costume themes.

  • Representation Matters: Costumes that mock or stereotype gender expressions or abilities can be hurtful.

  • Keep It Friendly: Avoid violent, gory, or fear-based costumes that might make others uncomfortable or trigger traumatic responses.

Thoughtful costume choices help create a welcoming space where everyone feels safe to participate and have fun!

Safe Trick-or-Treating

The Government of Canada has a list of useful Halloween safety tips, and we encourage parents to consider the following:

  • Choose bright or reflective costumes so children are visible to drivers.

  • Use face paint instead of masks that may block vision.

  • Stick to well-lit areas and travel in groups.

  • Remind children to check both ways before crossing the street.

  • Parents/guardians - inspecting treats before kids eat them can help to avoid choking hazards or allergens.

Celebrating Together

Halloween can look different for everyone, and that’s what makes it special. Some students may enjoy dressing up, while others may prefer quieter or sensory-friendly activities. Let’s make room for both, so every child can feel included and part of the fun.

By celebrating responsibly and with care, we can make this Halloween a positive experience for all students, families, and staff across the Abbotsford School District.
