PHOTOS: Olympic Spirit Comes Alive at Eugene Reimer Middle School
At Eugene Reimer Middle School, the gym was filled with colour, excitement, and national pride as students and staff came together for their Winter Olympics celebration. The long-standing tradition, recently revived, brought the spirit of the Games back to the school in a way that was both fun and educational.
There was a real buzz in the foyer as the opening ceremony began, closely resembling the atmosphere of the real Olympic Games. The whole school came alive as each class, representing their chosen country, proudly marched into the gym, waving flags, wearing country-themed attire, and showcasing what they had learned.
Students displayed their newfound knowledge of the countries they represented, sharing facts, symbols, and traditions with their peers. The ceremony was more than just a parade. It was a hands-on learning experience that blended geography, culture, and school spirit into one memorable moment.
Throughout the week, students are taking part in a wide range of fun and inclusive activities, many set up right in the gym. Events include:
- Wii ski jumping, luge, and skeleton
- Chess tournaments
- Trivia challenges
- Spelling bees
- Classroom-based Olympic games
These activities give every student a chance to represent their country, earn points, and cheer on their classmates.
Staff joined the fun as well, proudly representing Ireland and modelling teamwork and school spirit.
In one especially heartwarming moment, students representing Greece included former Reimer students who are now attending Rick Hansen Secondary School. Seeing alumni return to participate helped younger students feel welcomed, supported, and connected to the broader Abbotsford School District community.
District-wide Olympics Celebrations
While classes proudly represent countries from around the world, this week will end on a unifying note. Students and staff come together to cheer for Team Canada, sharing in the excitement of the Winter Olympics in Milano and celebrating the spirit of sport, teamwork, and community.
Across the district, other schools such as Alexander Elementary, Mathxwí Elementary, and Ten-Broeck Elementary also held their own Olympic-themed celebrations, showing how this tradition continues to bring learning and school spirit to classrooms across the district.
Together, these events reflect the district’s values of respect, trust, integrity, communication, and teamwork, and demonstrate how shared experiences help build strong, connected school communities.
