Mouat’s Benevolent Nerds Club Turns Extracurricular Time Into Compassionate Support

March 24, 2026

At W.J. Mouat Secondary, the Benevolent Nerds Club is helping students succeed through compassion, collaboration and peer support.

Led by Grade 11 and 12 volunteers, the club offers tutoring during lunch and after school in subjects like math, English and French. As a student-led extracurricular, it creates an engaging opportunity for students to take initiative while supporting their peers.

For many students, learning from a peer feels more approachable than asking a teacher. The club fosters a welcoming, judgement-free environment where students show care for one another, working together to build understanding, confidence and academic success.

That collaboration is making a difference. Students shared that tutoring has helped improve their marks, strengthen their understanding of course material and feel more confident in class.

The impact extends beyond academics. Tutors develop leadership and communication skills while experiencing the reward of helping others succeed, contributing to a strong sense of belonging within the school community.

Across the Abbotsford School District, clubs like this reflect how extracurricular opportunities engage students, build connection and support success both inside and outside the classroom.
