Highlights - Board Meeting - Feb. 15, 2022

The Abbotsford Board of Education regularly meets throughout the school year. Agendas and minutes from the public Board Meetings can be accessed through the District's Electronic School Board. Below is a summary of highlights from the meeting. To do our part to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and for everyone's safety, all public meetings of the Abbotsford Board of Education will be closed to the public and held virtually until further notice. The meetings will also be live-streamed.


Delegations & Presentations

2022 Indigenous Role Models

Each year, the Mamele’awt Indigenous Education Department selects role models to celebrate students who have demonstrated success in their schools and communities. Students apply for this award and submit a short application along with a ninety-second video. The Indigenous Education Advisory Committee provides the final approval of the students who are selected for this honour. Students are also awarded a $1000 scholarship toward their future goals. Some of the 2022 Indigenous Role Models spoke with Trustees.

Board Performance Review

The Board of Education Performance Review provides a process embedded in a context of continuous improvement and it is intended to help improve governance, increase accountability, demonstrate leadership, and create a foundation for continuous improvement. Gordon Li, Director, Education Services with BC School Trustees Association presented to the Board of Education.

Superintendent's Annual Report on Progress

Superintendent Godden provided a high-levelsummary of the strategic plan progress reports that the Board has received over the last five months. The information from this report will form the basis for the Board’s annual Measuring Up Report which will be distributed in March 2022. In addition, this information will be brought forward for consideration in building the 2022/23 budget.

Toti:ltcha Future Learning Plan - School Strategy for 2021-2022

Superintendent Godden presented a high-level summary of where the district stands in relation to the work of Toti:ltcha, our future learning plan. This included updates on enhanced health and safety measures, rapid antigen tests, and more.

Local School Calendar for 2022-2023 - Notice of Intent

A recommendation was put forward THAT the Board of Education serve Notice of Intent that the 2022-23 Local School Calendar will be presented for debate and vote at a regular meeting of the Board on March 8, 2022.

Operations

Yale Secondary: 50th Anniversary Open House

A recommendation was put forward THAT the Board of Education grant Yale Secondary and the Abbotsford Rugby Club approval to proceed with obtaining a liquor license under the guidance of the BC Regulation Branch requirements, and external insurance to serve alcohol at the May 14th anniversary event being held in the large gymnasium at Yale Secondary for an adult social celebrating Yale's 50th anniversary and fundraise for a Scholarship. This approval is contingent upon the PHO Covid-19 protocols and guidelines in place at that time of the event.

Enrolment Projections

Secretary-Treasurer Velestuk and the Manager of Capital Planning presented an update to the Board of Education regarding enrolment projections and methodology.

Amended Annual Budget Bylaw 2021-2022

Secretary-Treasurer Velestuk presented the Board of Education with an update on the 2021/22 budget cycle. A recommendation was put forward THAT the Board of Education approve having all three readings of the 2021/2022 Amended Annual Budget Bylaw in this one meeting.

Childcare Centre at Irene Kelleher Toti:ltawtxw

Secretary-Treasurer Velestuk provided an update to the Board of Education regarding a childcare space at the new elementary school opening September 2022. In March 2020, the Abbotsford School District was awarded a grant of almost $3 million from the Ministry of Children and Families to build a Childcare Centre at Irene Kelleher Totí:ltawtxw. This Centre will accommodate 88 licensed childcare spaces.
