Celebrating Long-Term Service: Tom Radnai’s 37 Years of Inspiring Lifelong Learning
For more than three decades, Tom Radnai dedicated his career to teaching science, particularly chemistry, at Abbotsford Senior Secondary. Retiring in June 2024 after 36 years in the classroom, Tom now continues to share his expertise as a Teacher-On-Call. His journey reflects not only a passion for education but also a deep commitment to mentorship, lifelong learning, and student success.
Can you tell us about your career in the Abbotsford School District?
I started teaching in the district in 1988 as a Teacher-On-Call, and then joined Abbotsford Senior in 1989. I taught there for 35 years, mainly science and chemistry, until my retirement in June 2024. I’ve since returned as a TOC and am enjoying this new chapter.
What do you enjoy most about teaching?
In the early years, I learned so much from veteran teachers. Abby Senior was full of legends who were generous with their time and resources. I carried that forward by sharing what I had learned with newer colleagues. Teaching is very much a full-circle experience.
Do you have a favourite memory from your time teaching?
One of the highlights was teaching former students’ children... that’s when you realize how quickly time passes. But the best memories are seeing students achieve their dreams, whether in university or beyond, and having them return to share their successes. That’s the greatest reward.
Can you share a success story?
A student once told me she wanted to become a radiation therapist after hearing me share personal experiences about my son’s health. This past spring, I was honoured to be invited to her graduation. Moments like that remind me of the impact we can have.
What advice do you have for new teachers?
Network. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel on your own. Reach out not only to colleagues at your school but across the district. Sharing resources and expertise saves time and helps everyone grow. And it works both ways—newer teachers often share technology skills and fresh ideas that inspire me, too.
What legacy do you hope to leave behind?
I want my students to embrace the idea of lifelong learning. Learning doesn’t end in grade 12. It continues throughout life. If I’ve inspired that mindset, then I’ve achieved my goal.
From his first days at Abbotsford Senior to his ongoing work as a TOC, Tom’s career reflects a passion for science, a dedication to mentorship, and a belief in the power of lifelong learning. His 36 years of service highlight the profound influence teachers have on students, colleagues, and the community.
