Student Transitions

Background


The purpose of this Administrative Procedure is to ensure the successful transition of students from schools outside and within the district.

Procedures


Information sharing and collaboration are key components of successful student transition to a new school community.

  1. Upon receipt of a transfer request school clerical will immediately email previous school/organization to obtain any G4 files, Education Plans, Behavioural Support Plans, Medical or Safety Plans.
  2. The principal (or designate) is required to consult with the sending school principal and review pertinent documents (including Individual Education Plans, Behaviour Support Plans, Medical or Safety Plans) within forty-eight hours.
  3. In the event that there is an Individual Education Plan, Behaviour Support Plan, Medical or Safety Plan:
    3.1 The principal convenes a School Based Team meeting to review student needs and determines class placement. The School Team is referred to consult with family.
    3.2 The Principal and School Based Team should meet with District Learning Services Helping Teacher to review any additional individual learning, health, or safety needs as required.
    3.3 A transition plan for the new student must be developed in consultation with the family.
  4. Students should not commence attendance until such time that these requirements are met.
